Research & Development
HI3 leverages the strengths, capacities, and resources of its 90+ partners — a vibrant biotechnology, health sciences, and biomanufacturing network that spans the innovation continuum — to collaboratively accelerate innovation, commercialization, and support biomanufacturing capacity to deliver equitable solutions and medical counter measures (MCMs) for current and emerging health concerns.
This is realized through HI3's three Research & Development Themes in Health Intelligence, Precision Intervention, and Process Innovation with cross-cutting capacities in established and coordinated pathogen surveillance networks; preclinical models and clinical trial execution; secure data pipelines for predictive modelling; and artificial intelligence and machine-learning enabled technologies.

Health
Intelligence
Collect and evaluate data that informs the development and implementation of MCMs, with equity in mind.
- Infectious threat surveillance, prediction, detection, and analysis
- Health data connectivity
- Patient cohorts and samples
- Public health policy and communication
- Community and equity-based participation

Precision
Intervention
Create and develop innovative and equitable MCMs that are made in Canada, adaptable, and rapidly deployable.
- Next-gen vaccine design and development (e.g., multi-pathogen; new prime/boost strategies or sites)
- AI-assisted anti-infectives and biologics discovery and development
- Point-of-care diagnostics
- Host-directed therapies (e.g., immune modulating, pathogen-blind)

Process
Innovation
Design, develop, and utilize next-generation biomanufacturing technologies to accelerate domestic scale up and production.
- AI-driven automation and digital modelling
- Cell-based and cell-free bioprocess innovation
- Advances in preclinical studies
- AI-assisted bio-analytics and quality assessment
- Gene-editing and bioengineering
